How to wear.. Check
I felt it this morning. The morning was darker, and there was a fresh breeze of cold air playing through my hair. I pulled at my jumper sleeves, covering my knuckles and pulling up my jacket collar to brave the 6am commute to work. It’s finally time for Summer to budge over and for Autumn to make its entrance – and guess what? Fashion has been awaiting Autumn with open arms.
t’s now finally time to pull out last years blazer, but if you’re looking for an update – check is the new trend. With thanks to Stella McCartney, New Look has released its identical twin. With being one of the fashion crowd’s cheat to chic, speed is needed to grab this bargain before it sells itself out – at just £29.99, it’s the best way to update the plain white tee (or in this season’s case, the logo tee) or even to pair with the casual boyfriend jeans that you save for hangover Sunday. To update the shape and take the jacket from the office desk to the Mayfair bar, sling the jacket on your shoulders and pair with leather trousers and a pointed stiletto or mule.
Now that we can FINALLY say it’s okay to wear a wooly jumper to work, the previous minimal navy, grey and black comfort knits have been transformed this season into colour. Not just any colour. Red.
From Max Mara’s Autumn/Winter 17 red sirens, to Altuzarra‘s crimson biker girls, red is the new way to make being comfortable, seem fashion forward. New Look once again has found the perfect cut in knitwear to imitate Max Mara’s slouchy silhouette, with a similar style available here. It is now okay to hide behind an oversized baggy knit, AND be at the forefront of AW17’s top seasonal trend.
I get what you’re thinking. Red isn’t necessarily the easiest colour to pull off, and the blazer doesn’t scream fun and fashionable… I hear you, it brings back memories of being back in secondary school, and having to wear a Marks and Spencers blazer every day for several years. I get you.
You’re looking for a way to have a little bit of fun? To explore red and print and stand out a little more than just wearing a jumper?
Work with double red to really have fun with tonal development. Play with texture in your tones to explore the drama that comes from clashing fabrics. Try working with clashing check with its opponent, the spot, to really put a tongue in cheek tone back into the check blazer. Goodbye secondary school, hello street style handbook (note: Marques Almeida is your BEST friend to add the fun factor into AW17’s favourite trend.
There was something about wearing that red jumper and checked blazer as I crossed the streets in South Kensington.. the red was almost pulling me out of the grey tones of that Autumn morning, establishing my character and outfit for that day, and the blazer made me stand a little a little taller, feel a little more eccentric. Goodbye comfortable knitwear and hibernation dressing, hello fashion.
